11 Title Tag Optimization Tips

In today’s world, all businesses strive to increase their performance by increasing their online presence. And to stay ahead they need to concentrate on Search Engine Result to get targeted traffic. Title Tags Optimization is one of the important parts of  Search Engine Optimization.

What is a Title Tag

Every web page has a name, and this is defined in that page’s HTML code using title tags. The title tag is a very important Search Engine Optimization (SEO) tool and also assists users in knowing at a glance whether the site is relevant to their needs.

Importance of Title Tag

The contents of a title tag are important in that they are used in several ways. These include:

Web Browsers – Web browser such as internet explorer, Mozilla, and Google chrome use title tags to create labels on open tabs in their title windows.

Search Engines – Search engines produce their findings as clickable headlines for their Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). These headlines are generated from the title tags.

Search engines also use the title tags by analyzing them to determine the page contents and translate the page subject or topic.

Social Bookmarking Sites – Social sites use title tags to assign default values to bookmarked sites. Web browsers act in the same way, making individual pages easily identifiable.

Internet Users – Users use title tags in various ways, including identifying websites that are likely to be relevant to their search, locating web pages through the names displayed on their tabs, find web pages bookmarked, and to gauge whether what other users have bookmarked in social sites and elsewhere may be of interest or relevance to them.

Title Tag Optimization for SEO

There are a few guidelines one should keep in mind when creating powerful title tags that maximize their Search Engine Optimization. These include:

Keyword First – Search Engines give more significance to the lead word in a phrase, so to make a title tag most effective, one should try to start with the keyword. But make sure it seems natural.

Keyphrases – Title tags that utilize keyphrases rather than keywords usually rank higher in search engines.

Pipes (|), Underscores (_), and Hyphens (-) – The use of pipes, hyphens, and underscores enables title tags to rank higher for different keywords. However, underscores are rarely used due to the fact that they do not appear professional.  But you can create your title tags without this by creating suitable, good looking sentences with the keyphrases you want to insert. For example, “Drawing Tips for Color Pencil Sketch”. This tag will give benefits for the two keyphrases “drawing tips” and “color pencil sketch”.

Unique Titles – Every single page on a website should have a unique title for easier categorization by search engines. It also increases the possibility of the search engine displaying several of your pages on its SERP.

Modifiers – Most users enter search phrases that include modifiers such as “cheap”, “affordable”, and “best”. Incorporating them in title tags makes a web page easier to find and rank higher on search engines.

Numbers – When the search engine displays its search results, most users are likely to click on the headline that shows figures such as “12 ways to avoid Forex fraud” rather than headlines that read “Ways to avoid Forex fraud”.

Stop Words – One should strive to exclude words that are unlikely to be used by users when searching for businesses and products through search engines. Stop words include “it”, “as”, and “by”.

Fewer Characters – Most search engines display only the first 69 characters in their SERPs. Fewer characters make it easier for users to read the web page title displayed. Search engines also use key word density analysis to rank web pages, which means fewer characters give the keyword a higher ranking.

Keyword Stuffing – One should avoid using too many keywords in attempting to increase their search engine rankings.

Punctuation and Symbols – Most search engines do not recognize special characters, punctuation marks, or symbols in the title tags and as such, these should be avoided.

Branding – One should make the web home page title begin with the business, organization, or product name rather than words such as “The” or “Welcome”. Aside from the home pages, the other pages of a site should include the business/product/organization name at the end of the title tag.
